Postcards and mailouts still remain an effective way to reach and entice people. There’s nothing like holding an attractive design in your hands! That said, when I do a postcard design, clients usually have me convert the design into web and Facebook graphics for a consistent look across the board. Scroll down for samples of some recent postcard designs and the story behind them.
Mohr’s Landscaping Services was growing and had me design a series of postcards that could be delivered throughout the city in time for landscaping season. These postcards tugged at the audience’s dreams for a personal oasis, and it was really fun to work with the copy!
I felt it was important the postcards looked unified and like they all come from the same company, so they share the same overall layout and design elements. However, the imagery is tailored to each specific message, and I used different styles of typography to express the personality of each headline. These designs got some additional mileage as Facebook banners for the company Facebook page.
Summer Solstice is a party weekend in Edmonton where swing dancing goes on until sunrise. For the last two years I’ve designed their promo material, including postcards, posters, and Facebook graphics.
Both postcard designs feature a mix of event photos and nostalgic imagery. The designs needed to emphasize the tight-knit nature of the swing dance community, as well as the fun to be had during a weekend-long bash. I felt that the nostalgic approach would put the audience in mind of great summer memories. The colours and style of the photos are meant to remind you of long summer nights spent staying up late and goofing around with your friends. Because the event is timed with a natural yearly occurrence — the Solstice — I added images of nature where I could.
When the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra turned 60, they took the opportunity to draw up a fundraising letter. I designed a die-cut mailout letter with matching envelope to draw readers into ESO’s message. The design is intended to evoke feelings of elegance and celebration.
